SEO with Images | How to Boost your Rankings

One very important aspect of your on-page SEO effort, is also one of those most often ignored. And that relates to optimising your SEO with Images. What do we mean by that?

Well, maximising SEO for images is ensuring that your images & their attributes are aligned to your target SEO keywords.

In other words, making sure that any information that is associated with a webpage image, correlates with the SEO intent for that page or resource.

The other aspect of images of course, is that they can be both aesthetically pleasing and serve an educational/informative purpose. They can be used to demonstrate how something is done, show important data, or to sell a product.

Let’s look at a few steps to achieve awesome search power with SEO for Images;

Configure your Image Alt Text

Primarily, we achieve this by editing the ‘Image Alternative Attribute’ or ‘Alt. Text’ – this is what search engine’s will use to identify what your image relates to.

As you can see in the attached snippet, this can be done quite easily in the image editing section of your page editor. In this case, the image relates to the ‘SEO Table of Contents’.

Of course, not all page editors look the same. You will have to get familiar with the plugin or theme before you can do this comfortably. Our advice would be to avoid putting in ‘Image Alt Text’ that doesn’t represent the actual image.

You need to find the right balance between your SEO focus keywords and the content itself.

Will strong SEO with Images drive Organic Traffic?

Yes and no. You may find that your image will come up in the image-related search results via Google quite quickly for the term you use!

If you have multiple images across the piece of content, it makes sense to branch out to long-tail keywords that are relevant to your post. With that said, the organic traffic generated by an image directly is not likely to be massive, unless it is a very unique and/or very informative piece of content e.g. infographic.

With that said, by doing SEO for images correctly on all of your webpages, it sends strong, positive signals to the search engines about the relevance of your content piece.

Therefore, it will help you rank better over time than you would otherwise.

The visibility of your images via search engine ‘Image Results’ will depend on the level of competition for the term you have used.

Don’t stress about that too much though, as even if you can’t compete with the top images directly, it all lends itself to better on-page SEO performance for your post.

Just make sure to complete this task for all images that you use!

Duplication & Conflicting SEO for Images

There’s one big pitfall to watch out for when developing SEO with images. Once you have uploaded an image to your media file, it is an individual asset. Hence, if you use it more than once, there is a risk that you unwittingly change the Alt Text for all associated uses across the site.

This will damage your SEO effort.

So make sure that if you need to use a different ‘image alternative text’ for the same image, you upload another version to your media library.
